Andre Showell

Andre Showell has been with BET since August 2000 where he serves correspondent and host for BET’s news briefs.  In the past,  he was the Washington correspondent for BET Nightly News.  He reported live from the Pentagon on 9-11,  from Ground Zero as the recovery effort got underway.  His assignments took him across the country to cover candidates on the campaign trail leading up to the 2004 Presidential Election.  When Hurricane Katrina struck,  Showell chronicled the stories of displaced residents, uprooted from their homes and struggling to find solace during the most devastating natural disaster to strike the U.S.

He has spearheaded a wide range of special franchise reports for the network.  Each week his “Building Black Wealth” segment brought to light issues related to home ownership, wise spending and investment strategies.   Showell also led coverage for BET’s innovative series on the black family:  “Under One Roof.”  The series of reports won accolades from both the National Association of Black Journalists and the Pew Center for Civic Journalism.

Showell’s contributions to BET’s coverage on the life and legacy of late R and B singer Aaliyah helped the broadcast earn an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding News, Talk, and Information Special.

He has a proven track-record as host of a number BET News Broadcasts.  He hosted the network’s telecast of civil rights legend Coretta Scott King’s funeral,   a broadcast which drew more viewers than any other national network.  He also hosted BET News’ highly-rated, prime-time look at the life of death row inmate Stanley Tookie Williams and his fierce battle for clemency.

Even before graduating from the University of Maryland, College Park, he joined top news teams throughout the Washington DC market.  He served as anchor/reporter for CTV News 15 in Largo, MD, writer at WRC (NBC 4) and producer/writer at WTTG (FOX 5).

He is active in the community, speaking regularly at schools and community events.  He is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, and auxiliary leader at the church of his birth.  A Maryland native, Showell lives in Baltimore.
